Tips for High School Guest Teacher

The following is a few tricks high students will use  to get out of actually doing any work for the day.
1.  Students will tell you they have already competed lessons left by the teacher.  They will ask if they can just read or talk quietly to each other.   NEVER  allow this activity.  Tell the students they will do the lesson assigned, even if they have completed it a dozen times before.
2. A Student or two will tell you hey are ahead of the other students and their teacher allow them to work on other activities at the table in the back of the room.  If this is true, the teacher will have left you a note saying so. Do not allow the students to do anything other than follow the lessons plans.  It will be in their lessons plans if the students are allowed to do other activities.
3. Small groups - The students will tell you that the teacher allows them to work together.  Unless it was stated in lessons plans, keep to the plans of the teacher.
4. Seating Chart - Students will try and sit by their friends when a guest teacher is the room.  One trick is to let them know you will take attendance by the seating chart, and if they are not in their right seat, they will be counted absent.   Give them a chance to sit in their regular seat.
5. I have informed the students at the beginning of each period that I am easy going, and I love to teach.  However, if they try anything out of the ordinary, I have no problem writing a referral.
6.  Any students that misbehave guest teachers need to please write a note to the teacher explaining what happened.  I have gotten from the internet a high school substitute form and use it on a daily basis.   This also helps you to explain the good things that happened in the class also.   A mentor told me that when there is bad news about a student to always sandwich it.   Tell good news first, followed by the incident that occurred, and then another positive aspect about that child. When I learned this technique it was much easier to deal with the teacher or parent.
