Sparkle Game

Instructions on How to play the game "Sparkle"

Students love to shine, and this game will help them sparkle with delight.

1.  Instruct students to stand at their desks  or in a large circle facing one another.  Depending on the configuration, the game will progress up and down the rows or clockwise around the circle.
2. Use Sparkle to practice spelling words.  Select a child to start and choose a world from the week's spelling and vocabulary list.  If the word is "learn" for example, the first student will say, "l".  The second student will say "e", and the third will say "a" and so on.
3. Ask a student to sit down if he gives the incorrect letter or asks to hear the world and letters again because he wasn't paying attention.   Tell the class to be quiet during the game to give everyone a chance to hear.
4. Listen until the students have spelled the entire word correctly and then tell the next student in line to say "Sparkle."  The child who is next in line after the "Sparkle Caller" must sit down and is out of the game.
5.  Tell the student in line start another word and continue the game until only one student is standing.  Consider awarding the winner with a sticker on his chart or a small prize.

My version:
If a child does not know the next letter in the word and he/she has to sit down, I like to give them a Sparkly Star with the word so that will help them learn how to spell the word.   I like to make a big deal out of them getting a sparkly star.  This way they do not feel like a failure.  I like to see progress with all students.

Other ways to use the game, "Sparkle"
Play Sparkle to teach other skills like memorization and simple math. If you're learning a poem in class, for example, have each student say one word or an entire line from the poem. If you're teaching basic addition facts, let students create equations as they go around the room.
